Unable to install Exchange 2007 SP2 / SP3

When an installation of Exchange 2007 SP1 is interrupted by a mandatory restart of the server during the setup, the following error message can appear while trying to installing Exchange 2007 SP2 or Exchange 2007 SP3.

Setup previously failed while performing the action “install”. You cannot resume setup by performing the action “BuildToBuildUpdate”.

If the inital setup of Exchange 2007 SP1 is resumed successfuly via the maintenance mode of the setup, the error can be fixed by deleting a watermark and the action registry key.

You can find the registry keys at the following locations;

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0\Admintools]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0\ClientAccessRole]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0\HubTransportRole]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0\MailboxRole]

For example delete the following keys;

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0\AdminTools]
"Action"="Install"
"Watermark"=dword:ffae9201

After deleting the keys you are able to install the Service Packs.
