Mobile Device Management enhancements in ConfigMgr 2012 R2

TENA2013TechEd North America is going strong and more and more information is shared with the attendees and community. In this blog I will try to share some of the highlights about the Mobile Device Management enhancements that will come with ConfigMgr 2012 R2 and the next version of Windows Intune.

Some enhancements on Mobile Device Management within ConfigMgr 2012 R2 in combination with the next version of Windows Intune are.

  • Enrollment for IOS and Android through a native app that can be downloaded from the Apple Store or Google play store.
  • Support for Andriod (2.1 and later) and Windows 8.1 (x86/x64 and RT)
  • Company branding of the Company Portals.
  • Push applications to mobile devices (Windows 8.1, iOS and Andriod)
  • Mobile application uninstall (via uninstall and part of selective wipe for Andriod)
  • Show the devices of users in the ConfigMgr console.

Device Ownership

Device Ownership attribute where you can configure if the device is personally owned or company owned. When doing an inventory of the device, company owned devices will report all hard and software information about the device. For personally owned devices, only software installed by the Company is inventoried. The attribute can also be used with Global Condition when deploying settings or software to your devices. When you enroll a mobile device into ConfigMgr the device is by default set to Personal. You are able to set the device to Company owned via the Console.

Mobile Device Settings in ConfigMgr 2012 R2

The ability of configuring mobile device settings via settings management is enhanced with lots of settings, see the figure below of the categories and the supported operating systems.

Remote Access Configuration

Configure networking profiles, like VPN profiles, WIFI profiles and certificates to Windows 8.1, Windos 8.1 RT, iOS or Android devices. ConfigMgr 2012 R2 also supports Windows 8.1 Automatic VPN.

Full and Selective Wipe.

With ConfigMgr 2012 R2 you are able to completely Wipe your mobile device or perform a selective Wipe. Initiating the Wipe is now done in minutes/seconds after executing the Wipe.
